Bandwidth Pollution Part 2 and other stuff.

Holly crap its June 10 already.. I received in another huge haul of Amiga stuff last week. In it was a boxed Commodore A1200, another A500 and an assortment of C64 stuff, including 3 more 1541 Floppy drives, so the past week, I have been busy going through it all and playing with a "Stock" A1200 with only a 20 meg Hard Drive and Workbench 3.0- it only has 3.0 ROMS.

I wanted to touch back on my last blog about Bandwidth Pollution. I also wanted to bring out that all the software manufacturers' are guilty of this also. When you boot your computer, think about all the software trying to connect to the internet. If you have some computer savvy, you shut down allot in MSConfig to save boot time, but just how many things are broadcasting all the time from your computer? I can tell you that this last week on the A1200 has been an utter joy, because it took less then 3 seconds to boot, and I don't have to relie on the machine connecting to the net every 10 seconds. I have a old desktop computer connected to my big tv to play movies and Windows is always screaming at me to connect to the internet for updates. It even tells you how many days since it last was on the net. Have we become so reliant on the net, that your computer will throw a temper tantrum if it can't connect? That box is made just for watching movies and DVD's, so it doesn't need in anyway to be hooked up to the net, but all the software wants it's internet fix.

This last week, Almighty Steve took to the stage and unleashed the new Iphone 4 to the slobbering masses. Guess what? Everything about that phone screams "Bandwidth Pollution". And now Apple wants to push Ads to your phone also, causing MORE Data usage and fees. I can see the Carriers killing the handheld market, because the phones will omit so much BP, and the data rates will get so crazy that we all might as well go back to just a cell phone like 12 years ago. Stream a movie to your iPad? Forget that, another $1000 bill to watch "Spiderman 2" (BELL Canada, charged a guy $2500 to watch Spiderman 2 on his phone, after they launch a whole bus campaign about "watching movies on your phone", a few years back).

I was also asked this week if I was going to get an iPad. The short answer is/was "No", Even IF I liked Apple and was remotely interested in their products, there are MUCH better tablets coming out soon. I wouldn't even consider the iPhone 4, when the HTC EVO 4G is so much cooler. I would not even look at a smart phone or a tablet unless it could seamlessly switch to Wi-fi or was Wi-Fi Only. Not until the Cell phone companies offer a reasonable "Unlimited" plan, And when I say "Unlimited" I mean UNLIMITED because here in Canada, the cell phone companies "Unlimited" means 1 gig a month or so, which,to me, is just pain fraud and false advertising, but they have been getting away with raping the customers for so long with false advertising, its truly pathetic. a typical example is the cable company does NOT guarantee high speed internet, even though you pay for "extra" speed, they can not even guarantee you will be connected to the internet even if you pay them. They guarantee only "up too" a certain speed. I wish I could say I will only pay my bill "Up to" what they want, but it may be less or none because I won't guarantee anything.
